Meikyuu KingdomToday I wanna talk about another Japanese RPG I recently did stumble over. This game is out in Japan for quite a while and was recently presented in Europe as well. The game from Kawashima Touichirou was published by the Adventure Planning Service company and can be seen of a mixture of different genres. While you have the classical dungeon exploring part, in this game you are also the rulers of a a kingdom and have fulfill the kingdom management parts as well. Last but not least the comedy elements are quite prominent in this game and it is quite obvious that it shouldn’t be taken too serious.

In Meikyuu Kingdom you start generating your kingdom and then your character (King, Oracle, Knight, Vizir, Ninja and Servant). A lot of tables assist in creating backgrounds for your characters and the kingdom itself. By a curse all the land is turned into a huge dungeon, which is the starting point for your newborn kingdom. Beside exploring your surrounding dungeon area, managing the people and the kingdom are some main elements here.

Like the typical Japanese RPG, this game also is quite light on rules and it is very easy and fast to get this game rolling. During the whole ruleset, a lot of tables help creating interesting stories without a lot of preparation time.

To have an easier time with all the skills and monsters in the setting, the books (only available in Japanese for now) are providing copyable cards for reference. I put a few cards for the King class together to show how they are roughly laid out.

If you out there have some fun experiences about this game, I’d love to read more about that…

Golden Sky Stories

Last week, a new kickstarted reward arrived at my home. It was the full package of Golden Sky Stories and was more than happy to hold the whole product finally in my hands.

This RPG was available on the Japanese market and got finally translated into English language with this kickstarter by Ewen Cluney. Like many other Japanese it has a very strong “honobono” (heartwarming) feeling, where social interaction between the characters and persona in the story is more important than combat or action scenes for example. So it is no wonder, that this game has a very strong Hayao Miyazaki flair and is compared to many of his animated movies especially.

In the game itself, which is based on a very low maintenance rules setting the players are taking the role of an little animal spirit who experience the town/countryside they are living and are interacting with the problems of the inhabitants there.

The cute manga style artwork is supporting this theme strongly and drags the reader vastly into the theme of this game. As soon as I get a few interested players around me, I will write more of my experiences with this game.
